Some places are more than hotels. They are living stories. The Singular Patagonia is one of them. It really is singular in every sense of the word and it is one of our favorite hotels we’ve stayed at in the world.
Located just outside Puerto Natales on the shores of the Last Hope Sound, this extraordinary property is unlike any hotel we have ever experienced. It is not simply built near history—it is history.
Originally constructed in 1915, the building was the Bories Cold Storage Plant, one of the most important industrial facilities in southern Chile. At its peak, this massive complex processed and exported sheep products across the world, helping to fuel the economic growth of Patagonia during the early 20th century. Ships from Europe docked here. Workers filled its cavernous halls. It was the beating industrial heart of the region.
For decades, the plant symbolized Patagonia’s rugged promise and global connection. Eventually, changing economic forces led to its closure. But rather than demolish it, visionaries preserved it.
Today, it has been reborn as The Singular Patagonia—a luxury hotel that honors its industrial past while embracing modern elegance. Walking through its halls feels like stepping into a museum and a sanctuary at the same time. Original machinery remains in place. Steel beams, brick walls, and massive pipes tell the story of human ambition at the end of the earth.
Yet alongside this preserved history is refined comfort. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the vast Patagonian landscape. The Last Hope Sound stretches endlessly toward snow-covered mountains. The light changes by the minute, creating a living painting outside your window.
There is a profound stillness here. A quiet that invites reflection.
This is a place that reminds you how small you are—and how fortunate you are to witness such beauty.
For Debbie and me, staying at The Singular Patagonia was not just about luxury. It was about connection. Connection to history. Connection to nature. Connection to the spirit of exploration that brought us here.
At the edge of the world, past and present coexist in perfect harmony.
And in that harmony, something inside you becomes still.
