There are some sites in the world that are so extraordinary and culturally significant that they have a category all their own. These unique landmarks are protected by international convention administered by UNESCO and are specially designated as World Heritage Sites because of their “outstanding value to humanity”. Currently there are 1,223 such sites (Italy has the most at 60), located across 168 countries, of which 952 are cultural, 231 are natural, and 40 are mixed properties. New sites are added each year. These are the must-see places around the globe and they form the blueprint for my travels. This list will likely change as I visit more of them, but my nine favorite sites (so far) are, in my order:
The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
Machu Picchu, Peru
The Parthenon, Athens, Greece
The Rose City of Petra, Jordan
Basilica de la Sagrada Familia and all things Gaudi in Barcelona, Spain
The Taj Mahal, Agra, India
Mont St. Michel, Normandy, France
Meteora, Greece
