Three Countries, One Unforgettable Day: Baga, Ax-les-Thermes, and Andorra

Our latest adventure brought us the thrill of exploring three countries in a single day, 12 hours to be exact: Spain, Andorra, and France. Nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains, each destination offered its own charm, history, and breathtaking landscapes. And it solved a life long mystery for me: Andorra exists and is not a fake country! Here’s a glimpse into our whirlwind journey that began at 7am from Barcelona on a spectacular sunny and mild temperature day.

Country 1: Baga, Spain – A Medieval Gem in the Pyrenees

We began our day in Baga, a picturesque village in Catalonia. Known for its medieval roots, Baga is a gateway to the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. Its narrow cobblestone streets, charming stone houses, and the 14th-century Church of Sant Esteve transported us back in time.

Historically, Baga was a hub of commerce and a refuge during the Middle Ages. The surrounding area played a significant role in the Catalan Revolt against Spain in the 17th century. Today, it’s a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts exploring the majestic Pyrenees.

The highlight is was an early morning stroll through the ancient town square, soaking in the serenity of this hidden gem before proceeding to a local tavern for cafes con leche to warm us up from the cool, misty mountain morning.

Country 2: Andorra – A Tiny, Vibrant Nation that Actually Exists!

ANDORRA sounds like the name of a planet in a Star Wars’ film and growing up I wondered if it actually existed. Our second stop confirmed the existence of this microstate which is sandwiched between Spain and France. At just 468 square kilometers, this tiny country punches well above its weight in history, culture, and adventure.

Andorra is famed for its duty-free shopping, stunning ski resorts, and Romanesque architecture. It is also a financial center and many banks have a presence here. Historically, it was established as a buffer state by Charlemagne in the 9th century. Its unique co-principality governance system, shared between the Bishop of Urgell (Spain) and the President of France, has persisted since 1278.

We stopped in Andorra la Vella, the highest capital city in Europe, at 1,023 meters above sea level. Surrounded by the rugged Pyrenees, we marveled at the stunning views.

This beautiful Alpine country was bustling with people on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. We spent much of our time riverside amongst the many cafes that line the picturesque river running through the town and had our picture taken on the famous bridge. Honestly we could have spent more time enjoying the buzzing towns in this remote country.

Stop 3: Ax-les-Thermes, France – Healing Waters and Alpine Charm

Crossing the French border, our final destination was the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes, known for its thermal springs. These springs, rich in sulfur, have drawn visitors since Roman times, and the town’s name itself references these healing waters (Ax, from “Aquae”).

We couldn’t resist putting our hands in the Le Bassin des Ladres, a public thermal pool originally built for leprosy patients in the 13th century. The therapeutic waters and crisp mountain air offered a perfect end to our journey.

Ax-les-Thermes also boasts charming streets lined with cafes and bakeries. Today the Saturday market was being held in the town square and Debbie bought several colorful cashmete scharves for gifts. We indulged in a flaky pain au chocolat as we admired the Pyrenean backdrop and reflected on the day’s adventures. Stunning!

The Pyrenees: Nature’s Masterpiece

The Pyrenees Mountains were our constant companion throughout the journey. Spanning 430 kilometers between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, they form a natural border between Spain and France, with Andorra tucked in the middle.

Rich in biodiversity, the Pyrenees are home to rare species like the Pyrenean desman and the bearded vulture. Historically, the mountains have served as a crossroads for cultures, from the Romans to the Moors and beyond. Today, they’re a playground for hikers, climbers, and skiers, offering trails that range from leisurely walks to challenging treks like the GR10 and GR11.

Reflections on a Day Across Borders

Traveling through three countries in one day was a whirlwind of cultures, cuisines, and landscapes. From the medieval charm of Baga to Andorra’s alpine allure and the healing waters of Ax-les-Thermes, this journey through the Pyrenees was a testament to the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or a foodie, this corner of Europe offers something unforgettable. For us, it was a reminder of how much diversity and wonder can be packed into a single day.
