We discovered a secret in Rome! Tucked away on Rome’s Aventine Hill lies one of the city’s most enchanting secrets: the Keyhole of the Knights of Malta. This unassuming peephole, set in a nondescript green door, offers a perfectly framed, almost magical view of St. Peter’s Basilica in the distance.
Peering through the keyhole, we were able to view an aligned pathway bordered by manicured hedges, leading the eye straight to the iconic dome of St. Peter’s, shimmering on the horizon like a mirage in the desert. The juxtaposition of the lush garden and the grandeur of the Basilica creates a picture-perfect scene, one that feels almost otherworldly.
This unique perspective isn’t just about the view—it’s a reminder of how small details, like a simple keyhole, can hold profound beauty and unexpected surprises. For travelers, it’s a moment of serenity in the heart of the bustling Eternal City and a testament to Rome’s layers of wonder waiting to be discovered.
But getting a good picture is not easy, as it’s just a peep hole. You really have to work at it as you can see from the pictures below. But the contortions and effort are well worth it because we were rewarded with great photos!
