We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to step into the world of cinematic legend at Rick’s Café to celebrate the end of our Magreb adventure. Inspired by the classic 1942 film Casablanca, this iconic venue recreates the magic and mystique of the movie while offering visitors a genuinely enchanting experience. And it has a great story itself! We loved it!
A Dream Realized
Opened in 2004 by American diplomat Kathy Kriger, Rick’s Café is a labor of love that brings to life the fictional nightclub immortalized by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Nestled within an elegant colonial-style building near the old medina and the Hassan II Mosque, the café captures the essence of the film’s romantic, bygone era.
From the moment we walked in, we were transported to the 1940s with its grand arches, hand-carved wooden bar, and soft, ambient lighting. The décor is a perfect blend of Moroccan artistry and old Hollywood glamour, featuring intricate mosaics, plush seating, and even a piano reminiscent of Sam’s in the movie.
Cuisine and Ambiance
Rick’s Café isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s also a haven for food lovers. The menu combines Moroccan and international cuisines, with dishes like lamb tagine, fresh seafood, and their signature crème brûlée. Every meal is a celebration of local ingredients and culinary excellence.
Live music adds to the atmosphere, with a pianist playing jazz standards and, of course, As Time Goes By. It’s the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening, whether you’re there for a romantic dinner or just a cocktail at the bar.
More Than a Tribute
Rick’s Café is more than a homage to a classic film; it’s a cultural landmark that captures the cosmopolitan spirit of Casablanca. It serves as a meeting point for travelers, expats, and locals alike, all drawn by its charm and allure.
Plan Your Visit
We made our reservations online months ago and it’s a good thing because the relatively small restaurant gets packed with locals and tourists alike. Rick’s Café is open daily for lunch and dinner, and reservations are recommended, especially for evening visits. Whether you’re a film buff or simply looking for a unique experience in Casablanca, this is one destination where “everybody comes.”
After all, as Rick Blaine might say, “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
