Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and in just six months, I’ll be setting foot on the Machame Route to make it a reality. As a first-time climber, the preparation journey has been as thrilling and challenging as the climb itself promises to be. Here’s a glimpse into how I’m gearing up for this epic adventure. Of course, Debbie Jamison Horres @Livewelltraveloften is my travel advisor for this experience.
First we’ve chosen Abercrombie & Kent as the outfitter because of their high rate of summit success offers me an outstanding chance of reaching the “roof of Africa”. The company is also famous for its comforts on the trail and at my age I’m certainly not opposed to that! Second this is a nine-day climb (six days on the mountain) to allow more time for premium altitude acclimatization that greatly increases my likelihood of a successful summit. Third, I’m climbing the Machame Route, a popular and challenging way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its stunning scenery and diverse terrain. The Machame Route will take me through lush rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert.
So what am I doing to prepare for the climb?
Extreme Treadmill Workouts
To simulate the steep ascents I’ll face on Kilimanjaro, I’ve been training daily on a treadmill for a year at maximum incline and high speed. These sessions are no joke. They push my limits, forcing my legs and lungs to adapt to the intense demands of climbing. Each workout feels like a small victory, building the stamina and mental toughness I’ll need on the mountain. Soon I will begin to incorporate upper body and core training to my workout schedule.
Long Walks for Endurance
While the treadmill focuses on incline, long walks are also a go-to for endurance. I’ve been clocking in several miles daily along with my treadmill workouts. Soon I will begin to carry a loaded backpack to mimic the weight I’ll carry on the trek. These walks not only further strengthen my legs but also give me a chance to test out my hiking boots and gear, ensuring everything is comfortable and ready for the journey. So far this year I’ve logged over 1,250 miles both walking and on the treadmill.
Watching My Weight and Diet
Proper nutrition is a cornerstone of my preparation. I’ve been paying close attention to my diet, focusing on lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. I’m watching my portions as well to keep my weight down as much as possible. Staying hydrated is also key. Maintaining a healthy weight and fueling my body with the right nutrients ensures I’ll have the energy reserves needed for the climb. I’ve even started incorporating high-altitude snacks into my routine to prepare my body for what it’ll need on the mountain.
Mental Preparation
Physical fitness is essential, but climbing Kilimanjaro is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. I’ve been reading books, watching documentaries, and visualizing the climb to mentally prepare myself for the journey. Knowing that the summit is as much about determination as it is about strength keeps me focused.
Expectations for the Climb
As I look ahead to the climb, I’m filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. I expect the journey to be grueling, with moments of doubt and fatigue, but also incredibly rewarding. The Machame Route is known for its breathtaking landscapes, from lush rainforests to rugged alpine deserts, and I can’t wait to experience it all firsthand. I anticipate that the final push to the summit, under the starry sky, will be the most challenging yet awe-inspiring part of the climb.
I also expect to learn a lot about myself along the way. Kilimanjaro is not just a physical test but a journey of self-discovery. I’ll need to dig deep, find strength in moments of weakness, and embrace the support of my fellow climbers. It’s a chance to connect with nature, push beyond my limits, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
The Climb as a Metaphor for Life
For me, climbing Kilimanjaro is more than just reaching the summit; it’s a metaphor for life. The mountain represents challenges we all face—steep climbs, unpredictable weather, and the need to keep moving forward despite obstacles. Each step on the trail mirrors the perseverance required to overcome life’s hardships. Just as I’ll rely on preparation, determination, and the support of others on the mountain, these same principles guide us through life’s toughest moments.
The climb is also a reminder to appreciate the journey, not just the destination. Every breathtaking view, every moment of camaraderie, and every step forward is part of the experience. It’s about finding joy in the process and recognizing the growth that comes from pushing ourselves beyond what we thought possible.
Conclusion
As the days count down, my excitement grows. The Machame Route, with its stunning views and diverse landscapes, is calling my name. Every step on the treadmill, every mile walked, and every healthy meal brings me closer to the adventure of a lifetime. A little less than six months from now, I’ll be standing at the base of Kilimanjaro, ready to take on the challenge and embrace the journey to the roof of Africa. Whether I reach the summit or not, I know this climb will leave me stronger, more resilient, and filled with gratitude for the incredible journey. Please follow my journey and wish me luck!
