I’m thrilled to share that this summer I’ll be embarking on an incredible journey: walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall in England! This iconic route is more than just a hike for me; it’s a walk through time, offering a glimpse into one of the most fascinating periods of history. A fun fact: Hadrian’s Wall was the inspiration for the giant ice Wall of the North in Game of Thrones. Why am I hiking Hadrian’s Wall? A little history on this UNESCO World Heritage Site will shed light on my motivation for this adventure.
A Brief History of Hadrian’s Wall
Built nearly 2,000 years ago during the Roman Empire, Hadrian’s Wall stretches 73 miles (117 kilometers) across northern England from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. Emperor Hadrian commissioned the wall in AD 122 to mark the northern frontier of Roman Britain and to protect the empire from the tribes to the north. The wall wasn’t just a defensive structure; it also served as a customs post and a symbol of Roman power and ingenuity.
What to Expect Along the Walk
This adventure will take me through a mix of rolling countryside, rugged moorland, and charming villages. Along the way, I’ll encounter fascinating historical sites, including:
- Housesteads Roman Fort: One of the best-preserved Roman forts along the wall, offering incredible views and a glimpse into the lives of Roman soldiers.
- Vindolanda: An active archaeological site where some of the most significant Roman artifacts in Britain have been uncovered, including ancient writing tablets.
- Chesters Roman Fort: Home to the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort and an impressive bathhouse.
- Sycamore Gap: Also known as the “Robin Hood Tree,” this iconic lone tree framed by the wall is a must-see and a photographer’s dream.
The walk itself promises to be both challenging and rewarding, with breathtaking landscapes and countless opportunities to connect with history.
I can’t wait to lace up my boots, take in the beauty of the English countryside, and immerse myself in the story of this ancient marvel. Stay tuned for updates as I prepare for this adventure and share the highlights along the way!
