A Royal Stroll: Experiencing Mumbai’s Queen’s Necklace

During our travels with FARTHER Together, Debbie and I have been fortunate to witness some of the world’s most breathtaking sights, but few places captivate the senses quite like Mumbai’s Queen’s Necklace. This iconic stretch of Marine Drive, curving elegantly along the Arabian Sea, truly lives up to its regal name—especially when viewed at night, when the shimmering streetlights resemble a string of pearls adorning the city’s coastline.

Designated as part of Mumbai’s UNESCO heritage district, Marine Drive is more than just a scenic promenade. It’s a living, breathing testament to the city’s vibrant soul. By day, locals and visitors alike gather to soak in the sea breeze, while in the evening, the golden hues of sunset paint the sky in mesmerizing shades of orange and pink. As night falls, the city lights flicker on, creating that famous “necklace” effect—a dazzling spectacle against the dark waters of the Arabian Sea.

As we walked along the promenade, the rhythmic crash of waves provided a soothing soundtrack to the ever-present hum of Mumbai’s energy. The Art Deco buildings lining the drive, part of the UNESCO-listed Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble, transport you to a bygone era, showcasing Mumbai’s unique architectural heritage. We paused to take it all in—the laughter of families enjoying the cool evening air, the joggers weaving through the crowd, and the street vendors offering everything from roasted peanuts to spicy bhel puri.

There’s something magical about Marine Drive. It’s a place where time slows down, where the vastness of the sea meets the endless possibilities of the city. It’s a reminder that beauty isn’t just in grand monuments or remote landscapes—it’s also found in the simple pleasure of a long walk, the glow of city lights on the water, and the shared experience of a place that belongs to everyone. Debbie even briefly joined a colorful wedding party!

Mumbai’s Queen’s Necklace is more than just a scenic spot; it’s the heartbeat of the city, a symbol of resilience, elegance, and the ever-present spirit of adventure. And as we stood there, gazing out at the Arabian Sea, we felt—once again—that deep, familiar thrill of discovery that keeps us traveling FARTHER Together.
