In less than three months from now, I’ll be setting off on one of the most exciting adventures of my life—climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route. As an almost 69-year-old cancer-survivor, this journey is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a testament to the spirit of exploration and the belief that age is just a number. We will soon severely test this belief!
Over the past months, I’ve been busy with my preparations. My final training regimen in the coming weeks will take me to the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal and Bhutan, where I will be hiking rugged trails in the Himalayas that mimic the challenges of Kilimanjaro’s varied terrain. These hikes will hopefully strengthen my body further, acclimate me to high altitude and increase my endurance but also remind me of the beauty and unpredictability of nature. Each step on these foreign paths will be a lesson in resilience and a reminder that the world is still full of new peaks to conquer, no matter my age. I have to give it my best shot to prove I can still do it and because my time is running out to attempt something like this. Debbie, my partner in life, is 100% behind me on this journey but she will not be with me on Kilimanjaro for she suffers from altitude sickness.
The Lemosho route, known for its scenic beauty and gradual ascent, feels like the perfect choice for me. Oh but it wasn’t my first choice as my original outfitter had me climbing the Machame route but they backed out last week because it will be the rainy season on the mountain – now I found this out! So I had to scramble to find another outfitter and fortunately Debbie did. They suggested the Lemosho route because of its beauty and the 8 day climb will better acclimatize me on the way up.
Now I’m drawn to its promise of stunning vistas, diverse ecosystems, and the opportunity to acclimate gently to the altitude. While the climb will undoubtedly be tough especially on “summit day”, I find comfort in the meticulous preparation I’ve been able to undertake. Plus I’ll have the support of experienced guides along the way.
At almost 69, my thoughts often turn to the many journeys I’ve embarked on over the years, including the fantastic but arduous Inca Trial in the Andes, but that was 30 years’ ago! This upcoming climb isn’t just about reaching the summit though; it’s about me and embracing life’s challenges with open arms and a determined spirit. It’s a celebration of years of experience, wisdom, and the understanding that every mountain—literal or metaphorical—is there to be overcome. I’ve found that seeming obstacles are mere opportunities in disguise.
As the days dwindle down to the start of my Kilimanjaro adventure, I remain filled with a mix of excitement and reflective calm and honestly a little apprehension. I’m ready to take on the majestic slopes, to breathe in the high-altitude air, and to prove to myself once again that every age holds the potential for new beginnings and incredible feats. At least I hope so in my case.
Stay tuned as I share more of my journey, both the triumphs and the trials, succes or failure from the Himalayan trails to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The adventure of a lifetime awaits, and I’m thrilled to be taking these steps into the unknown.
Namaste
