We love Amankora hotels and we had the opportunity to stay at two during our recent journey to Bhutan. One of the many features we really liked about the five Bhutan Amankora hotels is that the layout of all the hotel suites is the same so our new room was already familiar to us.
There are five-star hotels, and then there is Amankora Punakha—a retreat so exclusive that reaching it feels like crossing a threshold into another world. Accessible only by a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River, this secluded Aman outpost embodies tranquility, understated elegance, and Bhutanese charm in its purest form. The bridge over the rushing river waters literally leads you to another world of unparalleled serenity.
A Journey Across Worlds
The adventure begins long before you arrive at Amankora Punakha. The only way in is via a charmingly rustic suspension bridge, its colorful prayer flags fluttering in the Himalayan breeze. With each step across, the world behind fades, and an extraordinary sense of peace takes its place. On the far side, a waiting guide greets you warmly, ready to lead you through terraced rice fields to the sanctuary ahead. Carts took us from the river to the resort a short but uphill distance away.
An Intimate Retreat
Amankora Punakha, housed in a former Bhutanese nobleman’s residence, blends centuries-old heritage with Aman’s signature minimalist luxury. The twelve-suite lodge exudes an air of exclusivity, with warm timber interiors, expansive views of the emerald valley, and the soothing sounds of the river below. A central courtyard, framed by a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, serves as the heart of the retreat, where guests gather to unwind after days filled with exploration.
Beyond the Ordinary
What sets Amankora Punakha apart isn’t just its location—it’s the experience. Days here unfold at an unhurried pace: guided hikes through verdant rice paddies, private meditation sessions at hidden monasteries, and afternoon teas overlooking the Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most stunning fortresses. The spa, housed in a converted farmhouse, offers traditional hot-stone baths that melt away every last trace of tension.
Then there is the infinity pool: the only one of it’s kind in Bhutan. I honestly don’t know which is better: the view or the inviting heated waters. We took advantage of the pool after a long hike to a temple and it was the perfect remedy for aching muscles. The gin and tonics served poolside didn’t hurt either.
Dining is an affair of its own, where locally sourced ingredients shine in dishes that celebrate Bhutanese flavors with a refined Aman touch. Whether it’s Ema Datshi (Bhutan’s famous chili cheese) prepared with finesse or a perfectly cooked yak steak, every meal is a culinary revelation. Dining outside on the terrace under the stars beside a roaring fire was an existential experience to life our souls even higher.
Why Amankora Punakha?
For those seeking the ultimate in serenity and exclusivity, Amankora Punakha is a journey and a destination rolled into one. The suspension bridge serves as more than just an entrance—it’s a passage into a deeper connection with Bhutan’s timeless beauty. Here, in the shadow of the Himalayas, life slows, the soul breathes, and the world beyond the river feels a thousand miles away.
