The Consolation Prize

By Stratton

If life is a game we’re all playing, then growing older is how you start to learn the rules. And wisdom? That’s the greatest consolation prize of all.

I’ve made a fair number of mistakes in my life. But with every misstep came a lesson. And with enough lessons, you start to notice patterns. You start to know what matters. And you start to let go of the rest.

Wisdom doesn’t arrive like a thunderbolt. It’s more like a whisper that gets louder over time. It shows up in quiet restraint, in choosing kindness over being right, in knowing when to speak and when to listen.

I used to think being wise meant having all the answers. Now I know it means being okay with not having them—and staying curious anyway. It’s really about asking the right questions.

So here’s to growing older. To stumbling, to learning, to laughing at yourself. Here’s to the unexpected prize of wisdom: earned the hard way, worn like a badge, and shared whenever possible.
