Big changes are coming for U.S. and Canadian travelers heading to Europe—and they’re going to cost more than before.
Starting in late 2026, the European Union will require visitors from visa-exempt countries, including the United States and Canada, to obtain travel pre-authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). Originally planned as a modest €7 fee, the ETIAS cost is now expected to triple to €20 (about $22 USD).
This new requirement applies to most short-term travelers entering the Schengen Area, which includes 27 EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Ireland is not part of this requirement. Children under 18 and adults over 70 are exempt, but most travelers will need to apply online and pay the fee prior to arrival.
🧾 Entering the U.S. Will Also Cost More
Meanwhile, the U.S. is significantly increasing entry fees for many foreign travelers. Beginning in October 2025, most applicants for nonimmigrant U.S. visas—including tourists, students, and business travelers—will be charged a new $250 “Visa Integrity Fee.” This is in addition to existing visa fees, which already range from $185 and up.
Even visitors from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries like the UK, France, and Germany will see fees rise, with the ESTA application fee increasing from $21 to at least $40. The Form I-94 fee is also set to quadruple from $6 to $24.
Although the U.S. claims the $250 integrity fee may be refundable if visitors fully comply with visa terms, the refund process is not yet clear.
