Yesterday after Vindolanda, we set off eastward for a seven-mile hike along one of the most breathtaking stretches of Hadrian’s Wall. We picked right up where we left the Wall the previous day. Taking the high, more difficult route, the path rose and fell in a series of steep inclines and challenging descents, each climb rewarding us with sweeping views across the Northumberland countryside. The wall itself, standing in quiet defiance of time, seemed to guide our way along the craggy Whin Sill ridge.
Midway along, we passed the site of the once-iconic Sycamore Gap tree – tragically felled in 2023. For over 150 years, it stood in the dip between the ridges, one of the most photographed and beloved natural landmarks in Britain. Its absence now leaves a bittersweet gap in the landscape, a silent reminder of both nature’s beauty and its fragility. But the good news is that the tree is shooting sprouts and will live to grow strong again. And the two hooligans who did the dastardly deed are serving four+ year sentences.
We paused for a brief rest at the trig point high marker, catching our breath and soaking in the late afternoon light spilling over the hills, before continuing on to meet our vehicle bound for Hexham – our home for the next three days.
Hexham welcomed us with cobbled streets, historic stone buildings, and the striking Hexham Abbey at its heart. After checking in, we took an evening stroll around the ancient town, its history whispering from every corner. The day ended perfectly with our group dinner at Bonjourno, a warm Italian restaurant where lively conversation, laughter, and plates of pasta, pizza, and wine filled the table.
Another day on the Wall – filled with history, challenge, beauty, and camaraderie.
