Debbie Jamison Horres and Stratton Horres go on a movie studio tour, get discovered and end up in a movie – sort of, kinda. For the incredible movie video please check out my Facebook page.
Today was one of those cinematic days where the journey itself is the destination. We left the rugged beauty of the Dades Valley at first light, watching the sun stretch slowly across the red rock formations as we began our drive west.

Morocco has a way of constantly reinventing itself—every turn revealing a new landscape, a new texture, a new story. Our first unforgettable stop was at Atlas Studios near Ouarzazate—often called the “Hollywood of Africa.” Walking through these vast, weathered sets felt like stepping into a living time capsule of film history. Gladiators, pharaohs, prophets, and kings have all “lived” here.

It’s remarkable how this quiet desert town has served as the backdrop for so many epic stories. Yes, we ended up in a movie! Our tour group of French Americans practiced a scene for about ten minutes under the able direction of our tour guide who then filmed the scene. Debbie and I starred as Pharoah and Queen. It amazed us that so little turned into so much! It was such great fun and a wonderful shared experience with strangers.

Next and not far away, we visited the legendary Aït Benhaddou—the ancient ksar. Rising from the earth like a mirage, its clay walls and towers seem almost too perfect to be real. This UNESCO World Heritage site has been featured in countless films and series, including my favorite Gladiator, with and standing within its walls, you understand why. It’s not just a setting—it’s a character. A place where history and imagination blur.
From there, the drive turned more dramatic as we began our crossing of the High Atlas Mountains via the breathtaking Tizi n’Tichka Pass. This was no ordinary drive—it was an adventure as the Pass was shrouded in fog. Winding roads carved into sheer mountainsides, dramatic drops, and sweeping views that demanded we stop, breathe, and take it all in.
The scale of the High Atlas is humbling. Jagged peaks, deep gorges, and remote Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides—this is Morocco at its most raw and elemental. The energy shifts here. You feel smaller, quieter, more present.By the time we descended toward fabeled Marrakech, the landscape softened, the air warmed, and the pulse of the city began to call us forward. From desert dunes to ancient kasbahs, from film sets to mountain passes—today felt like traveling through multiple worlds in a single day.And now… Marrakech awaits.
