Hiking Gibraltar: A Journey Through History, Nature, and Mischievous Monkeys
This week we sailed past the iconic Rock of Gibraltar and it was deja-vu for us as we climbed and hiked across the big rock, all 8 miles of it, a few years ago. It was a thrilling experience and one of our favorite memories. What possessed us to attempt such a thing? What was it like? It was difficult but very rewarding, especially since we celebrated our accomplishment at a cafe at the base with lots of wine and champagne!
A tiny but historic British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of Spain, Gibralta offers more than just stunning views of the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Hiking this iconic Rock is an adventure that combines breathtaking landscapes, fascinating history, and close encounters with its most famous residents: the Barbary macaques.

Whether you start from the town below like we did or take a cable car partway up, the journey is rewarding. The Mediterranean Steps, a challenging but scenic route, winds along the cliffside, offering jaw-dropping vistas of the sea below.
Encounters with Gibraltar’s Famous Monkeys
No hike on the Rock would be complete without meeting its cheekiest inhabitants—the Barbary macaques. These wild monkeys, Europe’s only population, are both adorable and cunning. They roam freely, often congregating near popular spots like the Ape’s Den.
While their antics—snatching snacks or posing for photos—are entertaining, it’s essential to respect their space. Feeding them is prohibited and can lead to hefty fines, but more importantly, it helps preserve their health and natural behaviors.
One unforgettable moment was watching a curious macaque investigate a hiker’s backpack, clearly aware that humans often carry treats. Another perched on a ledge, surveying the Strait as if contemplating its own historical significance.
Walking Through History
Gibraltar is steeped in history, and its trails bring you face-to-face with remnants of its storied past. The Great Siege Tunnels, carved by British soldiers during the 18th century, offer a glimpse into the ingenuity and determination of those defending the territory. Further along, the World War II tunnels echo more recent chapters of Gibraltar’s military importance.
Other landmarks include the Moorish Castle, a medieval fortress that whispers tales of Islamic rule and centuries of conflict. As you climb, you’re walking through layers of history—Roman, Moorish, Spanish, and British—all etched into this strategic peninsula.
