As my 70th birthday approaches just a little over a year away now, I’m faced with an incredible, yet challenging question: where in the world should I go to celebrate? It’s not just a matter of picking a destination—it’s about finding a place that aligns with this milestone and makes a meaningful mark on my bucket list.
This isn’t the first time I’ve had to make a big travel decision, but this one feels particularly significant. Each journey we take is an opportunity to embrace life, experience wonder, and create lasting memories. With so much of the world to explore, how do you narrow it down?
Here are a few thoughts I’m considering as I make this momentus decision:
1. What’s Been Calling Me?
Some destinations linger in your mind for years. Is it a breathtaking view you’ve always wanted to see in person? A culture you’re eager to experience? For me, it’s about tapping into those deep-seated dreams I’ve carried for a lifetime.
2. Big Adventure or Quiet Reflection?
Milestone birthdays can be a time for bold adventures, like hiking Mount Kilimanjaro (which I’m already preparing for!) or something more reflective, like wandering the Great Wall of China or watching the Northern Lights dance across the Arctic sky.
3. The Bucket List Balance
Every traveler knows that balancing your bucket list is an art. Some places are fleeting—opportunities that might not come around again. Others feel timeless. Should I prioritize the places that might not wait or revisit a favorite destination to see it with new eyes?
4. Shared Experiences
Traveling with Debbie, especially on a milestone like this, adds an entirely new dimension. Where would we both enjoy going and celebrating together? How can this trip be about connection as much as discovery?
5. The Element of Surprise
Finally, there’s something magical about leaving room for spontaneity. What if the best trip isn’t one I’ve already dreamed of, but something I’ve never considered?
No matter where I choose, I know this trip will be about more than checking a boxes on my bucket list. It’s about celebrating the joy of life, the wonder of exploration, and the beauty of this incredible world we get to call home.
Where would you go for a milestone birthday? And how do you decide what’s next on your bucket list? I’d love to hear your thoughts as I weigh this exciting decision.
