What Drives You?

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself—”what is my driving force”? That deep, inner engine that pushes you forward, even when the road gets steep and uncertain? For some, it’s ambition. For others, love. Maybe duty, faith, or even fear.

For me, the answer has evolved over time. Early in my career as a trial lawyer, it was the pursuit of mastery—honing my craft, standing in the arena, and advocating for my clients. But I learned that mastery alone is hollow without meaning. Over time, I realized that what truly drove me wasn’t just winning cases, but understanding the human condition—why we struggle, how we tell our stories, and what we leave behind. I came to understand the importance of being kind to everyone I encountered because everyone has hidden struggles they are dealing with in their lives.

That realization has followed me from my legal career into my retirement and writing, into travel, into every new challenge I embrace. Whether it’s trekking to and attempting the summit of Kilimanjaro, exploring ancient wisdom, or seeking the next adventure with Debbie by my side, my driving force has become experience—deep, authentic engagement with life in all its complexity.

I want to see, to learn, to push boundaries—both external and internal. To step beyond ignorance, because ignorance is the greatest sin to me. To understand not just the world but my place in it.

What about you? What gets you out of bed in the morning? What force inside you refuses to be ignored? Because if you don’t know—if you’re moving without a compass—you’re letting the wind, not your will, decide your course. And I believe life is too precious to be left to chance.
