As I wrote in my first book Showing UP over 25 years’ ago, the ego is a powerful force. Much has happened in the following 25 years and now that I’m retired I’m revisiting the subject of the ego and the role it plays in our lives.
The ego is our driving force; it pushes us to achieve, to strive, to define ourselves in the world. Without it, we might lack the drive to succeed, to create, or to stand up for what we believe in. But like fire, the ego must be contained. When it burns too hot, it consumes everything in its path—our relationships, our peace, our sense of self. Sometimes in my life my ego overheated and got the best of me.
I learned that unchecked, the ego blinds us. It makes us believe we are always right, that our perspective is the only truth, that we must win at all costs. It whispers that we are separate from others, better than or less than, feeding either arrogance or insecurity. When ego takes control, we lose balance. Decisions are made out of pride rather than wisdom. We lash out instead of listening. We chase illusions instead of embracing reality. The consequences of an unchecked ego can be disastrous fir ourselves and others.
History and mythology are full of cautionary tales about the dangers of ego unchecked. The Greek hero Achilles, invincible in battle, was undone by his own pride. His refusal to yield, his need for personal glory, led to his downfall. In modern times, we see leaders, politicians, artists, and thinkers undone by their own hubris—believing themselves beyond error, beyond consequence. The result? Isolation, destruction, and regret.
But the ego is not the enemy. Like a skilled trial lawyer shaping a case, we must learn to direct its power. A well-managed ego gives us confidence without arrogance, ambition without recklessness, self-respect without self-obsession. The key is awareness—knowing when our ego is serving us and when it is ruling us.
How do we restrain it? By practicing humility. By seeking truth over validation. By recognizing that every person we meet has something to teach us. By remembering that success is fleeting, and the only lasting victory is mastery over ourselves.
A life dictated by ego is a fire left uncontrolled—it will eventually consume everything. But a life where the ego is harnessed? That is a fire that warms, inspires, and illuminates. Show up in your life not as a prisoner of your ego, but as its master. That is where true strength lies.
