The Amazing and Mysterious Tiger’s Nest

This hike goes down on my personal top ten list of life experiences. Although strenuous, it is doable if you prepare for it properly. If you’re in decent physical shape and you have a good guide your chances of reaching the Monastery are very good.

The major thing to be aware of is the altitude! You’re climbing to over 10,000′ and the air gets very thin making each step a chore. The altitude effects everyone differently. Once you acclimate in the way up, however, the hike is easier and much more enjoyable. One of the surprises is that the hike going up actually reaches a point higher than the Monastery so you decend into it before walking up more steps into the monastery. This means when leaving the Monastery you have to hike back up the trail on the way back!

The scenery going up and coming down though is spectacular. I’m attaching a few more pics to illustrate. Remember to take hiking sticks, stay hydrated and take it slow “it’s not a race”! Plus you will share the trail with people who ride up to the halfway point on donkeys. We stopped at the very nice cafeteria at the halfway point and had a steaming cup of tea which helped our fortitude immensely.

The inside of the Tiger’s Nest is a world of flickering butter lamps, deep saffron and maroon fabrics, and the scent of incense hanging heavy in the air. The monastery consists of multiple small temples, each adorned with intricate murals of Buddhist deities and stories from Guru Rinpoche’s life. Golden statues of the Guru in various manifestations stand in dimly lit sanctuaries, their serene faces illuminated by candlelight.

Monks in deep-red robes move quietly through the chambers, chanting prayers, their voices echoing softly against the stone walls. The wooden floors are worn smooth by centuries of devotion. Offerings of fruit, rice, and butter lamps sit before sacred altars, adding to the sense of reverence.

The atmosphere inside is otherworldly—silent yet alive with spiritual energy, as if time has slowed to a whisper. Despite the dramatic journey to get there, the interior is a place of stillness, where visitors can feel the weight of centuries of faith and contemplation.

And the views of the Valley far below are breathtaking!
