Hiking to the Temple of the Divine Madman in Bhutan

Bhutan’s Punakha Valley is home to one of the most intriguing spiritual sites we’ve ever visited—the Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of the Divine Madman. This 15th-century temple honors Drukpa Kunley, a revered Buddhist master whose unorthodox teachings (and playful, often scandalous methods) still echo through Bhutanese culture.

The journey began with a short but scenic hike through rice fields and a charming village adorned with the bold, colorful phallic symbols (yes that’s right!) that Kunley popularized as a blessing against evil spirits. The temple itself, perched atop a gentle hill, is a peaceful sanctuary where couples come seeking fertility blessings. The experience is a blend of laughter, reverence, and a deeper appreciation for Bhutan’s unique spiritual heritage.

A visit to Chimi Lhakhang isn’t just about the temple—it’s about embracing Bhutan’s joyful, unpretentious approach to enlightenment.
