Perched high on a hillside above Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, the Great Buddha Dordenma gazes serenely over the valley—an immense golden presence shining through the clouds. At over 50 meters tall, this is one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world, yet what struck us most was not its size—but its silence.
Bhutan has a way of making everything feel personal. Even something this massive.
We approached the statue from a winding mountain road, each turn revealing more of the Buddha’s face until it finally filled the sky. The closer we got, the quieter the world seemed to become. Pilgrims circled the base in meditation and prayer, turning golden prayer wheels. A group of monks chanted softly beneath the main platform. And above them all, the Buddha’s bronze eyes looked out over Thimphu with infinite calm.
Inside the statue, we found another surprise: 125,000 smaller Buddha statues enshrined within. Each one was cast in bronze and gilded in gold, just like the larger figure that houses them. It’s an architectural and spiritual marvel—and a living symbol of Bhutan’s deep devotion to peace and enlightenment.

We lingered here, breathing in the thin Himalayan air and the stillness that wrapped around us like a robe. We watched clouds slide across the valley like whispered blessings. And we tried, for just a moment, to match the Buddha’s gaze—soft, open, and all-seeing.

Bhutan calls itself the Land of the Thunder Dragon, but here we found something quieter. A place where the divine doesn’t roar—it simply watches, waits, and welcomes.
