A Timeless Haven in the Heart of Tanzania: Our Stay at Gibb’s Farm

After days of trekking and safari adventure, we discovered a peaceful oasis tucked into the green slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands—Gibb’s Farm. This historic coffee estate, dating back to the 1920s, offered a restorative pause in our journey, blending luxury with authenticity, and nature with nurture.

The moment we arrived, we were welcomed by the scent of blooming flowers, fresh coffee, and warm smiles. Surrounded by lush gardens, ancient fig trees, and the rhythmic sounds of village life nearby, Gibb’s Farm felt more like a home than a hotel. Each cottage is a private sanctuary, with a crackling fireplace, outdoor showers, and sweeping verandas that overlook the Great Rift Valley or coffee fields below.

The farm-to-table meals were some of the best we’ve had in Tanzania—freshly harvested produce, homemade bread, and expertly prepared dishes using ingredients sourced steps from our cottage. We enjoyed long, lingering meals under the stars, accompanied by the distant sounds of crickets and the occasional hyena call.

There’s a host of activities offered at Gibb’s Farm. One morning, we walked the grounds with a Maasai guide who shared stories of the land and culture. Another day, we joined the farm’s artist-in-residence for a watercolor session, inspired by the colors of the coffee harvest. And in the evenings, we watched the sun set over the Ngorongoro forests, feeling grateful for the stillness.

A special highlight came during the evening happy hours, when members of the local Iraqw and Maasai tribes visited the farm to share traditional songs, dances, and stories. Of course Debbie got into the act! With drinks in hand and the firepit crackling, we found ourselves immersed in the rhythms and spirit of Tanzanian heritage—a rare and beautiful chance to connect not just with the land, but with the people who have called it home for generations.

Gibb’s Farm is more than a place to stay—it’s a place to be. To be restored. To be connected. To breathe deeply and remember the simple beauty of living in harmony with nature.
