Our excellent guide Charmy picked us up at the Gran Melia and we headed across East Africa on our next adventure and first safari. Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania was a stunning blend of diverse ecosystems, abundant wildlife, and meaningful cultural experiences. Our visit to this remarkable park left us with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
A Tapestry of Landscapes
As we entered the park, we were immediately “ambushed” by a large troop of baboons. We were then immersed in a lush groundwater forest, where blue monkeys flitted through the dense canopy. This peaceful, shaded environment soon gave way to open grasslands and acacia woodlands, leading us to the glistening alkaline lake that covers two-thirds of the park. Charmy informed us that the lake has grown in size to the point of greatly reducing the available forest for the animals and the number of land for game drives. We saw clear evidence of this as lake water prevented covered many roads and prevented us from going further. The reflections of sky and escarpment dancing across Lake Manyara’s waters, however, made for breathtaking scenery.
Wildlife Encounters
Lake Manyara is famous for its elusive tree-climbing lions—a rare behavior we were lucky enough to witness firsthand although not here. We did encounter large herds of elephants, elegant giraffes browsing treetops, and hippos cooling off in the lake shallows. The birdlife was truly spectacular, with thousands of flamingos tinting the lake pink and over 400 other species including pelicans, hornbills, and kingfishers making appearances.
We enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch at a beautiful spot overlooking the lake before proceeding on to our next destination, the incredible Gibbs Farm.
