After eight demanding days on Kilimanjaro, I descended from the mountain aching, exhausted, and full of emotion. There was no better place to reunite with Debbie and begin the process of decompressing than the Gran Meliá Arusha, a five-star hotel situated in a working coffee plantation.
Set in a lush oasis at the edge of the city, Gran Meliá felt like a world away from the dusty trails and high winds of the mountain. The moment I walked through its doors, I was greeted with warmth, serenity, and understated elegance—exactly what my body and soul needed.
But more than just a luxury hotel, the Gran Melia became a sacred reunion point. Debbie had been waiting patiently during the last two days of my climb, and this was our joyful reconnection after days apart. Our room was spacious, calming, and quiet—perfect for rest, reflection, and reconnection. Afterall I’d spent over a week with a tent for a home and a sleeping bag for a bed! And I badly needed a hot shower! After a shower and a shave I felt refreshed and ready to celebrate with Debbie.
The highlight of our stay was without question the rooftop terrace. That evening, we made our way up as the sun began to dip toward the horizon. From up there, the views of Arusha were spectacular—rolling hills, warm light, and the soft hum of the city below. It was the ideal setting to celebrate my summit attempt, with a glass raised in gratitude and awe.
We toasted the journey—mine up the mountain, and ours together through life’s peaks and valleys. The sunset, much like the Kilimanjaro experience, was fleeting, powerful, and unforgettable. After no alcoholic drinks for 8 days the gin & tonics were just what the doctor ordered! And the food was delicious.
Gran Meliá Arusha wasn’t just a hotel—it was a moment. A beautiful transition from the intense solitude of the mountain to the shared joy of togetherness.
If you’re climbing Kilimanjaro or simply exploring northern Tanzania, this is the place to pause, exhale, and soak it all in.
