Magic on the Mara: Wildlife, Culture, and Wonder at Angama

After trekking across Tanzania and the Serengeti, we crossed into Kenya for one of the most iconic safari experiences in the world — the Masai Mara. And it did not disappoint.

From the moment we arrived, the Mara stretched before us like a living, breathing canvas of life — endless golden plains dotted with acacia trees, herds of wildebeest on the move, elephants lumbering through tall grasses, and lions resting in the shade. This is the northern reach of the Great Migration, and the sheer abundance and drama of wildlife here was astounding. The game drives here were simply incredible. We even saw cheetahs chasing zebras across the mara – fortunately for the zebras a giraffe blocked their path and the zebras got away, this time. Cheetahs are the fastest animals on the planet and to see them on the hunt at fall gallop was one of the highlights of the dozens of game drives we’ve been on.

But it wasn’t just the wildlife that moved us. One of the most meaningful parts of our journey was visiting a Maasai village, where we were welcomed with warmth and open hearts. We had a sit down with the Chief and Elders, shared stories, and learned about the deep-rooted customs and resilience of this proud, pastoral people. The Maasai’s deep spiritual connection to the land and animals they live among gave new dimension to our understanding of East Africa.

And then there was Angama Mara — a lodge that lives up to its name, meaning “suspended in mid-air.” Perched on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, the lodge offers jaw-dropping views of the Mara Triangle below. The location is cinematic — quite literally — as scenes from Out of Africa were filmed nearby.

Our tented suite was a perfect blend of luxury and simplicity, and waking up each morning to the golden sun rising over the savannah below felt like a dream. From sunrise game drives to sundowners with sweeping views, every moment at Angama was infused with beauty, serenity, and awe.

This visit reminded us that the magic of the Mara is not only in the creatures that roam its plains, but also in the people who call it home — and in the moments of stillness when you realize how far you’ve come, and how deeply you’ve been touched.
