After weeks of trekking Kilimanjaro and exploring the wild heart of East Africa, we arrived at the coast for something entirely different—a place to rest, restore, and reflect. We found it at Diani Beach, a breathtaking stretch of Kenya’s southern coastline, where white sands meet the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
It’s hard to describe Diani without using the word magical. Everything here seems touched by grace—the soft ocean breeze, the rhythm of the tides, the golden light dancing on the water. It’s the kind of place that slows your heartbeat and soothes your soul.
Our home for this coastal retreat was the incomparable Alfajiri Villas—an intimate, luxurious sanctuary that instantly made us feel like we were in a dream. Set atop a coral cliff with sweeping views of the ocean, our private villa was a masterpiece of barefoot elegance. Hand-carved furniture, flowing curtains, and airy spaces opened directly to the sea. We had our own personal staff and chef, but what made Alfajiri truly unforgettable was the feeling that the entire world had slowed down just for us.
We spent long, lazy days swimming in our private pool, enjoying fresh and delicious seafood feasts under palm trees, and walking for miles along the beach where camels sauntered by and children played in the surf. One morning we just picked up sea shells as we walked on the powdery sand beach; another, we simply sat with a book, the sea our only soundtrack. And we had the greatest luxury experience of all: the daily massage!
Diani was the perfect counterpoint to our earlier adventures—a reminder that awe can be found in stillness as much as in movement. And Alfajiri was not just a place to stay; it was a place to heal and restore our souls. Plus Debbie had a special birthday while we were there and the staff knocked it out of the park for the celebration they planned for her. Asante sana Alfajiri!
As we watched the sun set on our final evening, painting the sky with colors we didn’t know existed, we felt something shift inside—a deep gratitude for the journey behind us and the peace we’d found by the sea.
