Letting Go of the Plan

“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.”
— Joseph Campbell

For over 40 years, I lived the plan.

I was a civil trial lawyer, a managing partner, a leader in high-stakes litigation. My days were filled with strategy, depositions, and the pursuit of justice. It wasn’t just my work—it was who I was.

Then came cancer.
Then came retirement.
And the plan I had so carefully built fell apart.

At first, I grieved the loss of that identity. But over time, something remarkable happened: I discovered a new life waiting beyond the old one.

A life filled with adventure and reflection. A climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. An upcoming walk across Hadrian’s Wall. A deepened commitment to health, joy, and presence.

Joseph Campbell’s words have stayed with me: true transformation begins when we release control and trust the journey.

If you’re standing at a crossroads, uncertain about what’s next, I invite you to consider this:
What life might be waiting for you—just beyond the plan?

Because sometimes, the most meaningful chapters are the ones we never saw coming.
