Choosing Positivity in Divided Times

We are living through turbulent – historical times. Geopolitical divides, cultural clashes, and economic uncertainties seem to dominate the headlines. Yet I’ve made a conscious choice—to stay positive.

Why? Because history teaches us that we’ve been here before. Neil Howe, in his excellent book The Fourth Turning Is Here, published just two years’ ago, reminds us that societies move in cycles, from growth and unity to crisis and renewal. Every crisis, though messy and painful, carries within it the seeds of transformation.

We are in that crucible moment now and likely will be for awhile. But it is also a moment of possibility. As a nation, we will rediscover – awaken – to who we are. We will remember where we came from. And we will find our way forward, toward a renewed awakening of purpose and direction.

Staying positive does not mean ignoring reality. To the contrary it means holding faith that the storm is not forever—that clarity follows confusion, and unity follows division. As Howe points out, each Fourth Turning ends with a rebirth, the awakening phase of the saculeum, when societies rise from the crisis stronger, clearer, and more committed to a shared destiny.

It is messy, yes. But we will find our true course and get on with it.

Stay positive and be an instrument of good. I believe the highest evolution of the human existence is empathy for our fellow brothers and sisters universally.
