While we’re all making resolutions and commitments for this new year I’d like to share one of mine because it comes through learned experience and my own healthcare crisis. It’s a simple word really but with tremendous meaning. So what is it?

My Guideword for 2026: Presence
Every new year brings the same familiar noise. And it’s hard to imagine going into a new year with more noise than we are experiencing right now!
New goals. New plans. New promises.
More productivity. More progress. More “becoming.”

And don’t get me wrong — I love ambition. I love growth. I love adventure.
But for 2026, I’m not choosing a resolution.

I’m choosing a guideword.

My guideword for 2026 is: Presence.
Because the truth is…
If I don’t learn how to be present, I can travel the world and still miss my life.

I can stand at the top of a mountain and be thinking about the next one.
I can sit across from someone I love and still be somewhere else in my mind.
I can be alive… and still not fully living.

And I’ve done that before.

I’ve lived seasons where I was moving forward, “successful,” doing all the things…
but inside I was distracted, hurried, and half-awake.

Presence is the antidote.

Presence is how you reclaim your days.
Presence is how you reclaim your soul.
Presence is how you stop sleepwalking.

And it’s the subject of a book I’ve written that will be published later this year. Presence isn’t just a word — it is a way of living.
It is a decision. A discipline. A return.
