Happy MLK Day to everyone! Today we celebrate a truly great man whose life ended far too early.
A new page from my retirement journal…
“Aren’t You Bored?” (Not Even Close.)
One of the most common questions my friends who are still working ask me is this:
“So… what do you do with all your time?”
And right behind it comes the next one:
“Aren’t you bored?”
I always smile when I hear that.
Because the honest answer is: Heck no, I’m not bored! Not even a littleven during the last two years I’ve learned that when you get your time back, you’ve been given a priceless gift.
Most people don’t realize how much time a career consumes until they finally step away from it. Not just the hours in the office—but the energy, the mental space, the constant pressure of being “on call,” and the feeling that your life is always scheduled for someone else. Sure, I loved being the guy my clients called on in a crisis. But that came at a cost. I didn’t realize how much until I@ fully retired.
Retirement—real retirement—doesn’t mean stopping.
It means starting.
It means you get something back that money can’t buy:
✅ Your mornings
✅ Your pace
✅ Your freedom
✅ Your attention
✅ Your life
Here’s what I do with my time…
I write.
I work out.
I paint.
I read.
I learn.
I explore.
I spend time with Debbie Jamison Horres .
I learn new things, revisit old dreams, and stretch myself in ways I didn’t always have the bandwidth to do during my working years.
And the best part?
I go wherever I want.
Not because I’m escaping life…
But because I’m finally fully living it.
Boredom is not in my vocabulary.
Boredom doesn’t come from having too much time.
Boredom comes from not knowing what to do with your freedom.
But when you start living intentionally—when you choose growth, movement, creativity, and connection—there’s no room for boredom.
There’s only possibility.
The real gift is presence.
Retirement didn’t just give me time.
It gave me the chance to become more present in each day.
More aware.
More grateful.
More alive.
I don’t sleepwalk through life anymore.
I show up for it.
Every day.
Every moment.
And that is the opposite of boring.
If you’re still working and wondering what comes next…
Here’s what I’ll tell you:
Retirement isn’t the end of your story.
It might be the beginning of your best chapter.
