Several wonderful nights at Cavallo Point Lodge felt less like a hotel stay and more like stepping into a living story for us—one that blends history, nature, and understated luxury in a way few places in the world can match.
Set at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito, Cavallo Point is built within the beautifully restored buildings of Fort Baker, a former U.S. Army post dating back to the early 1900s. Walking the grounds, you can feel the history in every detail—officers’ quarters turned into elegant rooms, large parade grounds now framed by sweeping views of San Francisco, and the quiet dignity of a place that has stood watch at the gateway to the Pacific for over a century.
Like The Singular Patagonia—another of our recent all-time favorite stays—Cavallo Point is not just a hotel, it’s an experience rooted in place, story, and soul.
Each morning began simply and perfectly: complimentary pastries and coffee enjoyed in that cool Bay air, with the bridge rising majestically in the distance. From there, we set out on some of the most scenic walks imaginable. The hike up to Battery Spencer delivered one of those “stop in your tracks” views—the Golden Gate Bridge stretching across the water, San Francisco shimmering beyond it, and the Pacific opening wide to the horizon. Equally special were the bay trails just behind the lodge, where every turn revealed another breathtaking perspective.
Dining at Sula and Farley was nothing short of exceptional. Whether enjoying the relaxed elegance of Farley or savoring fresh, vibrant dishes at Sula, every meal felt thoughtfully crafted and deeply satisfying. And then there’s the Cavallo Point Cooking School—Michelin-recognized and a true culinary gem—adding yet another layer to an already rich experience.
What makes Cavallo Point so remarkable is its balance. It is peaceful yet connected, historic yet modern, luxurious yet grounded. And just minutes away lies downtown Sausalito—a charming waterfront town filled with galleries, cafés, and that unmistakable Northern California spirit.
We’ve stayed in extraordinary places around the world, but Cavallo Point Lodge stands firmly among our favorites—for good reason. It’s not just where you stay. It’s how it makes you feel.
Together, we go farther.
