Morocco at age 70 – A Journey Into the Mystical

Soon, Debbie Jamison Horres and I return to Morocco on a journey that feels larger than travel.

It marks my 70th year on this planet.

Seventy.

A number that carries weight, wisdom, gratitude… and for me, a renewed sense of wonder.

My birthday isn’t until July, but Morocco calls now—when the air is temperate and the land is welcoming. And I am answering that call.

After more than 40 years practicing law… after stepping away from a life that defined me for decades… and after facing cancer head-on… this trip is not just another destination.

It is a passage.

A celebration.

A reflection.

And perhaps, a quiet transformation.

Morocco feels like the perfect place for this moment in life—a land of mystery and magic, where ancient worlds still whisper through medinas, deserts, and mountains.

Over several weeks, Debbie and I will immerse ourselves in its soul:

From the cinematic pulse of Casablanca
To the coastal grace of Rabat
The crossroads spirit of Tangier
The timeless labyrinth of Fes
The dreamlike hues of Chefchaouen
The edge of the Sahara at Merzouga
The vast silence of the Sahara Desert
And the rugged majesty of the Atlas Mountains

But the place that calls to me most… the one I’ve imagined for years… is Marrakesh.

Fabled. Exotic. Alive with color, sound, history, and mystery.

A place where past and present dance together.

This journey will be many things—an adventure, a celebration, a deep dive into culture, food, music, and history.

But for me, it will also be a time to listen.

To reflect.

To write.

To become.

To capture what I’m tentatively calling my Morocco Travel Journal—a continuation of the story that began with crisis, moved through Kilimanjaro and Hadrian’s Wall, and now unfolds into something deeper: presence.

If you’re so inclined, we invite you to follow along.

Walk the medinas with us.

Feel the desert winds.

Hear the call to prayer echo across ancient cities. This is one of our favorite experiences in Moslem countries. The call is mesmeric.

Experience, in some small way, the magic of Morocco. And I’m going there with my soulmate and life companion. Nothing could be better for me than to experience this with her.

Because as I’ve come to believe…

We are never too old to begin again.

And together…

We go farther.

The pictures are of our first visit to Morocco in December, 2024.
