Debbie Jamison Horres and I said goodbye to our wonderful stay at the Fairmont Tazi Palace Tangier and set out with our intrepid driver, Ben (our nickname), toward the fabled Blue City. What we expected to be a simple transfer became something altogether unexpected—a journey through a Morocco we hadn’t yet seen.
The drive unfolded like a painting. Lush green valleys gave way to jagged mountain ridges, all bathed in a soft, brilliant sun. Animals were scattered everywhere and dotted the landscapes. Along the way, we passed three dams and shimmering lakes that felt almost surreal against the rugged terrain. As we rolled through Tetouan, the city was alive with energy—an animal market Sunday in full swing, vibrant, raw, and deeply authentic.

Arriving in Chefchaouen, we met our guide Mohammed and stepped into another world. The medina, blissfully free of cars, invites you to slow down and simply wander. Every turn revealed a new shade of blue, every alley a new composition—this city truly is a living photograph. The temperature was perfect and the sky cobalt blue, just like the city. And did I mention blue is my favorite color?
After a late lunch, we checked into the new and stunning Taj Chefchaouen, where we were welcomed with traditional mint tea and sweeping views over the valley. It’s hard to put into words just how breathtaking the setting is—one of those rare places where you pause and simply take it all in. The scene just did not seem real.

As the afternoon softened into evening, we joined hundreds of people from around the world hiking up to the Spanish Mosque. Together, in a shared and unspoken reverence, we watched the sun dip behind the mountains. It was one of those magical travel moments—orderly, respectful, and quietly joyful—a reminder of how connected we all are.
Somewhere in the blue maze below, I found and purchased several original pieces of artwork from a local artist—a small but meaningful way to carry this place forward with me.
Dinner back at the Taj was equally unforgettable, overlooking the glowing city as night settled in. And then, as if the day hadn’t already given enough, a full moon rose and illuminated the valley in silver light.
A perfect day. A perfect evening. Morocco continues to surprise us in the best ways imaginable. It is, without question, a living photograph.

On to Fes with a stop at the ancient Roman city Voulobilis.
