This morning we reluctantly left Chefchaouen to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis, so named for the flower Morning Glory that grow everywhere on the site much to the delight of one Debbie Jamison Horres. En route we passed through Tetouan, known for its beautifully preserved whitewashed medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site itself that reflects deep Andalusian influence. Often called “the White Dove,” the city offers a graceful blend of Moroccan and Spanish heritage, expressed through its architecture, art, and vibrant cultural traditions.
But I wanted to explore Volubilis. We have learned that Morocco has something for everyone – in abundance. Any one who knows me knows I love history and especially ruins. And these Roman ruins are spectacular and located in a beautiful setting that even Debbie enjoyed.
Volubilis: Echoes of Rome in the Heart of Morocco
We stepped into the ancient world at Volubilis—and for a few hours, time simply disappeared.
Set against rolling hills and open skies, these remarkably preserved Roman ruins feel both grand and intimate. Walking along the original stone roads, you can almost hear the rhythm of daily life that once filled this outpost of the empire. Olive presses, merchant homes, basilicas, and triumphal arches still stand, whispering stories of commerce, culture, and connection.
What struck me most were the mosaics—intricate, vibrant, and astonishingly intact. Scenes of mythology and daily life laid out in stone, enduring centuries of change, yet still telling their stories with clarity and grace. It’s a reminder that even in a distant province, the Romans brought beauty, order, and a deep appreciation for art into everyday living.
Standing beneath the Arch of Caracalla, looking out across the vast plains, I was struck by how far-reaching human ambition has always been—and how temporary. Empires rise, civilizations evolve, but what remains are these fragments… these echoes… inviting us to reflect on our own place in the continuum.
Morocco continues to surprise us—not just with its color and culture, but with the depth of its history. Volubilis is not just a destination. It’s a conversation across time.
From Volubilis we travelled through Meknes and marvelled at the huge magnificent gates to the Medina.
We made it to the imperial city of Fes late afternoon and checked into the lovely Palais Faraj hotel located next to the ancient Medina which we will explore tomorrow.
We had a delicious dinner of lamb tangines and Moroccan wine before retiring after a long day.
