Debbie Jamison Horres and I are now two weeks into our Morroco journey. We leave Marakesh today for the High Atlas to do some hiking.
Morocco has a way of awakening something ancient within you.
Perhaps it’s the call to prayer echoing across the medinas at dawn…or the endless horizon of the Sahara whispering truths older than time…or the quiet strength of the Atlas Mountains standing watch over it all.
But for me, this journey has been something deeper—something profoundly personal. Traveling through Morocco while carrying the reality of cancer has heightened everything. The colors seem richer. The conversations more meaningful. The simple act of sharing mint tea with a stranger feels sacred. Every moment is no longer just experienced—it is received.Because when you know that radiation therapy awaits you on the horizon, time stops being something abstract. It becomes immediate. Precious. Alive.
Presence is no longer a concept. It becomes a necessity.
I find myself standing still more often—really standing—feeling the warmth of the sun on my face in Marrakech, listening to the wind move across the dunes, watching Debbie smile across a table as if it were the first time I’ve ever seen her. These are not just moments. They are anchors.Morocco has become a teacher.
It reminds me that life is not measured in years, but in awareness. Not in plans, but in presence. Not in what we fear, but in how fully we show up despite that fear. Cancer has its own lessons—uninvited, undeniable—but powerful. It strips away illusion. It demands clarity. And strangely, it offers a gift: the realization that this moment is enough.
As I prepare to return home and face the next phase—radiation therapy—I carry Morocco with me. Not as a destination, but as a state of being. To be here.To be awake. To be grateful. To be alive—fully, completely, without hesitation.
Every second matters now in a way it never has before. And maybe that’s the great paradox…that in facing our vulnerability, we finally discover our capacity to truly live.Together, we go farther—not just across continents, but deeper into ourselves.
Always choose love.
And peace.
