My Morocco Journal – Days 12, 13 & 14— Marrakech 🇲🇦

At last we reached my birthday dream city – Marakesh. In fact it’s very name means Land of God. Marakesh did not disappoint.

Marrakech pulled us in from the very first moment. The energy, the colors, the rhythm of the streets—it’s a place you don’t just visit, you feel. Just check out the video from the Jamaa El Fena or Gathering of Arts on my Facebook page. Each night the square transforms into a massive entertainment event with music, dancing, street food, stand up comedy, storytelling, acrobats, and on and on. And yes there really are King Cobras and snake charmers!

We spent our first day wandering through the Medina, getting beautifully lost in the maze of souks, where every turn revealed something new. We admired the stunning Koutoubia Mosque from the outside, its minaret watching over the city, and stepped into the peaceful courtyards of the medersas—quiet pockets of intricate craftsmanship and history.

Lunch at Le Jardin was a perfect pause—lush, calm, and deliciously refreshing before diving back into the vibrant chaos.

After lunch it was back into the souks and Medina, —slowing down, noticing details, textures, faces, and moments we might have otherwise missed. The craftsmanship here is something else entirely. Watching artisans at work—hands shaping, carving, weaving—was genuinely humbling.

As the sun set, the main square came alive in a completely different way. Lights, music, storytellers, and food stalls created an atmosphere that felt almost cinematic.

Day 13 was a relaxing morning at our
Riad before transferring to the magnificent and historic La Mumunia Hotel. We had a terriffic lunch in the garden patio and explored one of the leading hotels in the world. In evening we had booked a cooking class in a local home. Debbie Jamison Horres wrote a great post on our experience! Please check it out.

Day 14 – I explored Marakesh with a local professional photographer and saw the souks and Medina through his eyes. For several hours I was immersed into the ancient alleys and learned new photography techniques. It was a terriffic experience. That afternoon Debbie and I explored the beautiful gardens at La Moumunlia.

We also experienced two completely different stays in the city—from the intimate charm of a riad to one of Marrakech’s most iconic hotels. Each deserves its own story… and we’ll share those soon.

Marrakech, you’ve been as unforgettable as I
hoped and exceeded my high expectations.

We hope to return. Maybe for my 80th? Before that!

Namaste
