Let’s Talk Bucket List

“You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you.” – The Bucket List (2007)

When was the last time you sat down and asked yourself: What do I really want to do before I leave this earth? Not what you should do. Not what people expect you to do. But what your soul is quietly (or not-so-quietly) begging for. That, our Dear friends, is where the bucket list begins.

Too often, we wait for the “perfect time”—retirement, a windfall, fewer responsibilities. But life doesn’t promise perfect timing. Morgan Freeman’s character in The Bucket List said it best: “We live, we die, and the wheels on the bus go round and round.” Don’t wait for your bus to break down before you start living.

How to Make Your Bucket List

  1. Dream First, Plan Later
Don’t limit your imagination. What are the places, experiences, or challenges that make your heart skip a beat? Don’t worry about money, time, or practicality—just write.
  2. Divide & Conquer
Once you have your list, start sorting it by themes:
    • Adventure (Skydiving, Kilimanjaro, diving the Great Barrier Reef)
    • Culture & History (Petra, Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu)
    • Spiritual Journeys (Varanasi at sunrise, Camino de Santiago, Kyoto’s temples)
    • Personal Milestones (Writing a book, learning a language, seeing the Northern Lights)
  3. Plot It on a Map
One of our favorite ways to keep the dream alive is to pin each destination on a map—digital or old-school corkboard. Watching the pins grow over time is part of the magic.
  4. Start Small, Dream Big
Not every bucket list trip needs to be a Himalayan trek. Maybe it starts with a weekend in a town you’ve always skipped. Momentum builds with each checkmark.
  5. Set Timelines—but Stay Flexible
Ask: What can I do this year? Next year? In five? Life will throw curveballs, but having a vision keeps you moving forward, even if the route shifts.

Why Now?

Because “you’re not everyone,” as Jack Nicholson’s character reminds us. You’re YOU. And your time to live is now—not some vague future when everything is “settled.” That time may never come. And really, do you want to be climbing pyramids or ziplining through rainforests at 85?

Live It, Track It, Share It

Create a bucket list journal or digital tracker. Add photos, dates, and reflections. Share it with your loved ones, or better yet—invite them along. Some of our favorite memories come from shared bucket list moments, where the experience becomes part of your shared story.

So… what’s on your list?
Start today. Add one dream. Pin one map. Take one step.

As the film reminds us:
“You know, the ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about death. When their souls got to the entrance to heaven, the gods asked them two questions. Their answers determined whether they were admitted or not. ‘Have you found joy in your life?’ ‘Has your life brought joy to others?’”

That’s what FARTHER Together is all about. Going farther. Together. With joy.
