It ocurrs to me that although we live in a world literally overflowing with information—we are starving for wisdom and direction. It’s easy to assume we know because we’ve heard, read, or scrolled past something once or twice. But true knowing doesn’t come from passive absorption. It comes from actively seeking.
If we don’t ask the deeper questions…
If we don’t challenge your own assumptions…
If we don’t look inward as much as outward…
Then what do we really know?
One of my favorite sayings attributed to Jesus comes from the Gospel of Thomas and I will highlight it here because its on point for this discussion. Jesus said, “If you seek, you will be troubled. When you are troubled, you will marvel and rule over all.”
(Gospel of Thomas, Saying 2)
I believe this is my path – asking questions (after all lawyers are trained in the Socratic Method) and seeking answers. The trouble of seeking is not punishment—it’s the refining fire. The soul stirs when we step beyond what’s easy, when we dig beneath the surface, when we stop settling for borrowed truths.
Without that sacred disturbance, we stay asleep.
Without the seeking, we miss the marvel.
Without the courage to question, we never truly know.
The universe whispers, but it never forces.
The soul hungers, but it must choose to feast.
So ask. Seek. Be troubled. Marvel.
