“How Do I Feel?”

People often ask me: “How do you feel after cancer? After retiring? After climbing Kilimanjaro?” “At 69 years old?”

My answer usually makes them pause. I tell them simply: “I feel young!” Yes young, at heart and physically.

At first, that seems strange. I’ve lived a lot of life—decades of work as an attorney, raising a family, navigating challenges, and staring down cancer. You’d think all of that would make me feel old, worn, or tired. But the opposite happened.

I feel young because I’ve been through enough to know what matters. Cancer stripped away the unnecessary. Retirement gave me the space to breathe. Kilimanjaro reminded me that the human spirit can always rise higher. Hey, I’m just getting started and my best is yet to come!

When you’ve faced loss, fear, and the unknown, every sunrise feels like the first one you’ve ever seen. That’s what feeling young is: waking up curious, grateful, and ready to climb the next mountain—no matter how many you’ve already faced.
